NASCAR Checkered Countdown: Top-Five Indianapolis Finishes
No. 2 Jeff Gordon wins the inaugural Brickyard 400 after Ernie Irvan suffers a blown tire (1994).
The inaugural Brickyard 400 had the largest attendance to date for a NASCAR event. The drivers were fighting for a huge purse and glory. In the closing laps Ernie Irvan was out in front but Jeff Gordon was applying a big pressure on him. The sophomore driver was following the leader closely to plan an attack on the final lap but clearly had more speed. When Irvan went wide in turn one due to a tire going down Gordon did not waste the occasion and took the lead. With the driver of the #28 out of contention he had to switch his focus to Bobby Labonte and a group of three other cars that were tracking him down. He had no problems in doing that and got the checkered flag first earning a spot in NASCAR history.
