Loser: Beating The Heat

It was just plain hot for the Brickyard 400.

Going into the day, temperatures were expected to reach the mid to high-90’s with sunshine for most of the day, barring a few stray clouds here and there.

It didn’t matter if you were a fan in the stands or crew member on pit road (where there was an abundance of cooling machines lined up in the area), it was one of the hotter days at Indy.

Jeff Gluck of USA Today mentioned that the heat index was 107 degrees at the start of the race and New Hampshire Motor Speedway tweeted out that temperatures in the cars were reaching 114 degrees.

While many drivers had things like extra fans in their cars, they were still trying to find any and every way to stay cool. At one point, NBCSN showed a clip of Kevin Harvick pouring water into his fire suit and splashing it on his face during caution laps while Jeff Gordon asked for a bottle of water to be poured on him during a stop.

It may have been the hottest race of the year so far at Indy, but thanks to new technology and super cold water bottles, everyone was able to stay safe throughout the four-hour event.
