Loser: Team Penske’s Early Strategy
Throughout the many years of racing for Team Penske, the one thing they lacked was a win in the Brickyard 400. Rusty Wallace finished second three different times in his career and Joey Logano finished second last season, but no team driver has ever had the chance to kiss the bricks.
Early on in the race, it was obvious that the team was trying to change their luck. Kyle Busch had already zoomed out to an early lead, so when the field started green flag pit stops around Lap 30, both Keselowski and Logano stayed out.
They made it to about Lap 41 before heading to the pits as their strategy for a three-stop race went into effect.
Throughout the day, Team Penske cars were the only ones able to get past Busch, as Keselowski led 15 laps and Logano led six laps, but their strategy failed as they continued to get beat on restarts.
In the end, Keselowski was caught up in a wreck involving Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and Ryan Blaney, among others, while Logano managed to finish seventh after nearly beating Busch in the first overtime attempt.
