Winner: Upsets

It’s the story of the weekend and one of the biggest stories of the year: Chris Buescher captured his first Cup Series win just 21 races into his full-time career.

Coming into the day, Buescher had just three top-20 finishes on the season–an 18th-place finish at Dover, a 20th-place finish at Michigan and a 14th-place finish at Indy. In all honesty, he was heading for another one of those today had he not been left leading when the fog hit.

However, after he was put on a slightly different pit strategy, he ended up being on the track at the right time and he earned the upset of the year at one of NASCAR’s toughest tracks to conquer.

While he will have to be in the top-30 in points to make the Chase, he is just six points below 30th-place David Ragan, and should have no problem getting into position.

It’s rare that the NASCAR world has races like the one on Monday, where an extreme underdog makes it to Victory Lane due to the race being called, but it does happen, and Chris Buescher is now the first rookie to win a race in the Cup Series this season.
