1. Gateway Motorsports Park

Already considered likely to join the 2017 IndyCar schedule, Gateway Motorsports Park has been angling to get on the calendar since being listed as a testing site for the series. Now it appears they’re the front runner to fill the large gap in in August, returning open-wheel racing to St. Louis for the first time since 2003.

Much like NASCAR, the future of IndyCar’s success with attendance and television viewers could be with short tracks and road courses. The 1.25-mile Gateway oval currently hosts the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and appears to be on the upswing since it was revived in 2012 by Curtis Francois.

Gateway has been home to many close finishes and exciting moments for NASCAR’s junior divisions, and could easily do the same for IndyCar in the near future. Its addition would also help fill a scheduling hole that would prove to be awkward in the future, only working out this year due to NBC Sports being committed to the Summer Olympics.
