Drivers (and Danica)

There have been a number of crazy moments during the command to start engines over the years. Take The 2012 Daytona 500 for example when James Franco accidentally singled out Danica Patrick while giving the command to start the engines. Instead of just saying, drivers start your engines, like any person wanting to avoid controversy would, he made the mistake of saying, drivers and Danica start your engines.

Is Danica not a driver?

While Franco later admitted that the incident was just a shout out to Danica Patrick, who was racing in her very first Daytona 500 that year, many fans and even media pundits took it as a knock against Patrick’s driving ability. Whether it was really meant to be that or just a friendly shout out remains a debated topic even today, but it is was certainly strange and bewildering to watch live.
