Checkered Countdown: Top-Five Bristol Finishes
No. 4 Wallace wins battle against Ernie Irvan in dramatic fashion (1991).
After falling two laps down at the beginning of the event Wallace proved to be a champion once again by regaining both laps and also taking the lead. In the final laps it came down to a fierce fight between him and Ernie Irvan who was looking for his third career win. Once again slower cars gave an opportunity to the driver in second place: when Bill Elliott forced Wallace to check up, Irvan made the decisive move in turn three on the last lap.
He bumped the leader wide hoping to pass him when exiting the corner but it was not meant to be. Wallace had a big run on the outside and won the drag race to the finish line by less than a car length.
