Checkered Countdown: Top-Five Bristol Finishes
No. 1 The “rematch” of the 1995 finish goes to Earnhardt (1999).
In one of the most exciting NASCAR finishes ever, Dale Earnhardt got revenge for the win that he had missed in 1995. He was in the lead with five laps to go, with Terry Labonte in fifth place. Labonte had four new tires though and quickly gained spots until he passed Earnhardt coming to the white flag. It looked that it would be the same finish of 1995 but the seven-time champion had other ideas.

He got to Labonte’s bumper in turn two and spun him out, winning the race. In the post-race interview he pronounced the famous sentence “I didn’t mean to wreck him, I just wanted to rattle his cage”. This was a perfect example of the way of racing of the Intimidator.
