The Underdog: Austin Dillon

Stats at Michigan:

  • Wins: 0
  • Top-5’s: 1
  • Top-10’s: 2
  • Laps Led: 21

Austin Dillon is right there with Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, in terms of drivers close to earning the first victory of their careers.

Dillon had a good run at Pocono a few weeks ago and made his presence known at Bristol this past weekend, finishing fourth, but let’s focus on his career at Michigan.

It was a rough start for him as he had four finishes of 20th or worse in his first six starts, but his last two have been impressive. In last season’s August race, he led 19 laps and earned his first top-10 with a fourth-place finish. Just this season, he finished eighth, with another great outing.

2016 has been a year of growth for Dillon. Since he entered full-time Cup Series racing in 2014, he’s been looking for a breakthrough. While he still hasn’t earned his first win yet, he’s been noticeably better and much more competitive.

It’s just a matter of time until Dillon finally makes it to Victory Lane. Keep an eye on him this weekend.
