Loser: Jimmie Johnson’s Pit Stop From The Lead
Jimmie Johnson was looking to continue his rise from a mid-season slump. From the first Bristol race of the season all the way to Watkins Glen, he had finished in the top-10 just three times with seven finishes below 20th.
However, last weekend at Bristol, he earned an encouraging seventh-place finish and took his momentum to Michigan.
Johnson was able to get out front about halfway through the race and ended up leading 37 laps–the most he had led in a race since the trip to Richmond in the ninth race of the season. He certainly looked like he had a car capable of taking him to Victory Lane.
However, with about 90 laps to go, drivers went through green flag pit stops. As Johnson came in, his crew had an issue filling up his tank, which caused a slight delay and led to him losing his lead over Chase Elliott.
Later on, he feared that he had a tire going down so he came back in under caution and fell back to 10th place, where he would work himself back to sixth before the end of the race.
It was still great day filled with lots of speed for the No. 48 team, but they missed a chance at possibly winning and finishing in the top-5.
