Who are the primary contenders and early favorites to claim the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship as their own?

We are officially under one month until the Verizon IndyCar Series gets underway with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. That race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 12, 2017.

Until then, it is all speculation in terms of which drivers are most likely to do well and which drivers are not. While all drivers will start the season with no wins and no championship points, certain drivers stand out above the rest in terms of their likelihood of winning the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship when that is all said and done in mid-September at Sonoma Raceway.

This list is composed of the five drivers that have the best chance to be the 2017 IndyCar champion as well as some that are just outside the top 5. Since the standings turn out differently each season, don’t expect this to be the average “same as last year” type of list. No two seasons are alike, and that is reflected in terms of who the drivers are that are most likely to win the Astor Cup.
