Ryan Blaney took his first career Cup Series pole on Friday evening at Kansas Speedway and is looking to convert that into his first win.

Following a weekend at Talladega where Ricky Stenhouse Jr. took his first career Cup Series win, Ryan Blaney joined the party by taking his first career pole for the Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Speedway. The Wood Brothers Racing #21 Ford beat out fellow blue oval Joey Logano for the top spot.

Like in previous races in 2017, technical inspection caused rampant issues with drivers getting out on track. Twelve drivers did not get to take a turn on track during the opening round of qualifying in the heartland. This included Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer, and Erik Jones, eliminating a number of contenders for the pole.

Perhaps the feel-good story of the weekend is the return of Carl Long to Cup Series competition, returning to the series for the first time since 2009. Despite starting last for Saturday night’s event, Long cleared his issues with NASCAR brass over an old outstanding penalty from the 2009 All-Star Race.
