Second generation NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney took the victory on Saturday afternoon in the Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In 2006, the Buckeye Bullet himself Dave Blaney held off Matt Kenseth to win in the then-Busch Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Some eleven years later, his son and one of NASCAR‘s rising stars Ryan Blaney held off a threesome of Cup Series stars to win in the Queen City.

Blaney, taking his second Xfinity Series win of 2017, charged forward from the rear of the field to win in the #12 Ford for Team Penske. Kevin Harvick finished second on the day, with Austin Dillon, rookie Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top five.

The race saw a dozen separate incidents that brought out the yellow, knocking out contenders along the way. The issues began early with Daniel Hemric hitting the wall on lap 3 of the race. Later, JR Motorsports teammates Michael Annett and Elliott Sadler would each find their way into the barriers. Finally, Darrell Wallace Jr., who was a contender and lead the most laps all season for the #6 team, succumbed to a scrape of the wall and a flat tire.

After series officials put down a layer of rosin on the top groove at Charlotte ahead of the race, there was an increase in activity on the top groove, that ultimately led to more passes for position. In a race that in recent years has always been for the bottom of the track, this year’s event brought back side-by-side racing as it should be. It will be interesting to watch how this develops over a race double in length on Sunday for the Cup Series.
