NASCAR’s veteran drivers are disappearing too quickly
By T. Walker
Is This Part Of A Plan?
Does NASCAR intend to quickly push younger drivers up and into Cup cars this fast? It bothers me that Chris Buescher just signed an extension with JTG Daugherty Racing but Matt Kenseth doesn’t appear to have a future in the Cup Series. Doesn’t that bother you?
It is baffling that a veteran driver like Matt Kenseth does not have something solidified and Chris Buescher does. How about the fact that William Byron has a Cup ride and Kenseth doesn’t? Was Dale Jr. on to something when he talked about NASCAR salaries? Is it financially smarter to hire young drivers because they’ll take less money, whereas veteran drivers are going to want top dollars?
I don’t know, but what I can say with conviction is simple–if you don’t have fans watching, how do you expect to attract sponsors? NASCAR is losing fans every week. One reason among many is that fan’s favorite drivers aren’t on the track anymore. So who are fans supposed to root for?
I get the William Byron move by Hendrick Motorsports, but no, I don’t get it. You cannot tell me that you can put William Byron in a car but not Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth or Carl Edwards. These are veteran drivers who can still race, still want to (not sure about Edwards though), and still have a solid fan base.
