Formula One: Looking back at Lewis Hamilton’s record 69 poles
By Asher Fair
11th pole – Spa Francorchamps, 2008
Lewis Hamilton sat on the pole at Spa Francorchamps for the first time in his career and drove a solid race, but he was unable to win. He led just 3 of the race’s 44 laps en route to a disappointing, albeit decent, 3rd place finish.
12th pole – Mount Fuji, 2008
Just as he did in his rookie season, Hamilton took the pole for the race at Mount Fuji. However, he was unable to convert that into a victory like he did in 2007. While he finished all 67 of the race’s laps, he didn’t lead any of them and ended up finishing way down in 12th place.
13th pole – Shanghai, 2008
For the second straight season to start off his career, Hamilton sat on the pole at Shanghai. He did much better in the 2008 race than he did in the 2007 race, as he finished in 19th place in his rookie race at Shanghai. In fact, he won the race in 2008 after leading 53 of 56 laps. The win was the ninth of his career and seventh from the pole position.
14th pole – Valencia, 2009
Hamilton claimed his first pole of the 2009 season at a track he had never taken pole at before. He ended up leading 31 of the race’s 57 laps at Valencia, but he was ultimately unable to convert that success into a victory, as he ended up coming home in 2nd place.
