One of the most wildly popular support series in the United States is the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Previously racing under two separate divisions in the Northeast and Southeast, the series is now unified under one banner, racing up and down the east coast. These uniquely styled vehicles have put on quite a show over the years, earning a special place in the hearts of short track racing fans.
Few truly know that the Whelen Modified Tour is NASCAR’s oldest division, incarnated in February 1947. It is also the stock car racing body’s only open-wheel division, with modifieds serving as the most unique and different vehicles one can drive in NASCAR. The style of these cars has endured for years, with close to a dozen manufacturer combinations being sanctioned as recently as 2006.

Today, the Whelen Modified Tour sanctions races from New Hampshire to South Carolina. Racers travel up and down the eastern seaboard to race in these bullrings on Friday and Saturday nights in addition to three companion races with the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Often in these companion races, Cup stars will cross over to the modifieds, with Ryan Newman a frequent competitor. Coverage of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour can be seen on FansChoice.TV and NBCSN.
