#5 – Alain Prost

Alain Prost may be considered underrated on this list by many people, as he was in 2nd place in the all-time wins list before the 2016 season ended and he is still in 3rd place on that list with there being not much of a chance that he falls out of the top 4 anytime soon.

Plus, Prost is also in a 3rd place tie on the all-time championships list behind just two other drivers. So why is he only ranked #5 in these rankings and not higher, where the basic statistics of wins and championships would suggest he should be ranked?

First of all, one of the drivers who trails him in the wins category trails him by just a few victories and is still an active driver. This same driver is also tied with him in the championships category. Secondly, another driver who trails him in the wins category has a nearly identical win percentage to him and did not get the opportunity to match him in wins or championships as a result of being killed in a wreck.

This is not to say that Prost’s statistics are not impressive; they are historically good. But the fact remains that there are two drivers, one of whom is still active, who have better cases to be made for them even though their win and championship numbers don’t quite measure up to his. Prost is definitely a top 5 Formula One driver of all-time.
