#8 – Richard Petty’s seven Daytona 500 victories
Richard Petty’s sever career Daytona 500 victories over the course of his 35-year career in the NASCAR Cup Series sit atop the all-time Daytona 500 wins list in the history of the sport, and there are no other Daytona 500 win totals that are even close. In fact, there will probably never be another total in the sport’s future that even comes close.
Only one driver in the history of the Cup Series has a Daytona 500 victory total that is more than half of the Daytona 500 victory total that Petty has, and that driver is Cale Yarborough, who won the Daytona 500 on four separate occasions in the Cup Series over the course of his 31-year career.
Yarborough’s Daytona 500 victory total that is a total that is only barely half of Petty’s total of seven. Among active drivers, 42-year-old Jimmie Johnson has the top Daytona 500 win total of two in 16 full seasons, so he is not in the running to catch and pass Petty in the Daytona 500 wins category.
Among drivers who are not likely to retire within five years of Johnson, Trevor Bayne and Joey Logano probably have the best chance to finish their Cup Series careers with the highest Daytona 500 win totals. Bayne, 26, has one Daytona 500 victory so far through three seasons of full-time Cup Series competition, and Logano, 27, has one as well through nine seasons of full-time Cup Series competition. However, neither of these two drivers are anywhere near having a chance to catch and pass Petty in the Daytona 500 wins category.
