2018 Indy 500: Team power rankings

#12 and #11
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing had strong practice sessions leading up to qualifying for the Indy 500, but their qualification results were disappointing for both drivers. In fact, of the 10 multi-car teams entered in this year’s race, they had the lowest qualifying top qualifier, as Sage Karam qualified in 24th place. The next lowest top qualifier of a multi-car team was Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Robert Wickens, who qualified six positions ahead of Karam in 18th. That said, the team themselves as well as Karam and J.R. Hildebrand individually have had success in the Indy 500 before, so it would not be a surprise to see those two drivers work their way to the front of the field.
Harding Racing performed right about where they were expected to in just their second Indy 500 entry with their lone driver, Gabby Chaves. After Chaves qualified in 25th place for the race last year as a part-time driver, he qualified in 22nd this year as a full-time driver. There don’t appear to have been huge strides made by the small team from last year’s race to this year’s race, but having that experience and the success of what turned out to be a ninth place finish for Chaves in last year’s race should serve them well in the race itself.
