NASCAR: What’s wrong with NASCAR? Part 5 – Scheduling
Solutions: Part 2
Road course racing is a must. Some fans don’t like it, but in recent history, it has been one of the best forms of stock car racing. Personally, I have always enjoyed road course racing because drivers have to do something their cars are not designed to do.
Keeping this sentiment, I believe that NASCAR needs a minimum of four road course events on the schedule. First and foremost, Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International are great assets and should remain on the schedule. I’d like to see the race at Sonoma held earlier in the season as part of the “West Coast Swing”, but that’s just me being nitpicky.
In addition to the two existing road course races, I’d like to see the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval be eliminated and replaced by a REAL road course facility. The track on the top of this list for me is Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. This track played host to many Xfinity Series events and didn’t disappoint.
Going back to Montreal not only provides a great racing venue, but it gets our Canadian fans involved. Whether you believe it or not, we have a lot of fans above the border, and this would be one great opportunity for NASCAR to capitalize on that.
So where would the fourth event be held? How about Road America? The Xfinity Series already has an annual event at the 4.048-mile race track, so why not add another great race? This track is also a great geographical replacement for Michigan International Speedway or Pocono Raceway considering it resides in the great state of Wisconsin.
Lastly, add Iowa Speedway. I don’t have to go in depth on this solution because it’s common sense. Quit building facilities with the intention of hosting Cup Series races and never giving those dates to them. That track has earned a Cup Series date.
