Most teams honor NASCAR history with their own throwback paint schemes at Darlington Raceway. Here are 10 that deserve to hit the track in the future.

For the fourth consecutive year, various teams honored NASCAR‘s past with special “throwback” paint schemes at the Southern 500. Today, we look back at some paint schemes that should be considered in the future.

The Southern 500 is one of NASCAR’s most coveted races. Since 1950, it has stood as one of the most premier races on the schedule. There was a slight absence from the event from 2005 to 2008, but in 2009, it returned to the schedule in spectacular form. In 2015, the race regained its place on Labor Day Weekend, which is when it was hosted from 1950 to 2003.

When NASCAR reestablished the Southern 500 on its traditional date in 2015, many teams hatched an idea to honor the event’s illustrious history. Special “throwback” paint schemes were designed in order to pay tribute to drivers and teams of NASCAR past.

The NASCAR community responded warmly to the tributes. The paint schemes honored champions of the past such as Bobby Allison and David Pearson as well as old brand designs for companies such as Bass Pro Shops and Lowe’s.

NASCAR soon turned the event into a full-fledged homage to the past. It was complete with a retro broadcast crew, TV graphics and even Kyle Larson honoring Kyle Petty by growing a mustache. Yes, it has been a real spectacle the past few years.

Still, I find myself yearning for some teams to honor paint schemes that they have yet to touch. So today, we have my own Darlington paint scheme wish list.
