NASCAR: 4 drivers who could sign with Richard Childress Racing for 2019
By Asher Fair
Matt DiBenedetto
Matt DiBenedetto announced last week that the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season will be his final season driving the #32 Go Fas Racing Ford. He currently sits in 30th place in the championship standings, which is last among full-time drivers, and has no desire to continue driving around at the back of the pack in pretty much every non-restrictor plate race.
The 27-year-old Grass Valley, California native admitted that he is taking a risk by giving up his ride with Go Fas Racing given the fact that full-time Cup Series rides are hard to come by nowadays, but this risk could pay up in the form of him being offered a contract to drive the #31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.
Richard Childress Racing have not been a top-tier team in recent years, but they have won at least one race in each of the last two seasons. They are a mid-pack team that have been far more competitive than Go Fas Racing have, and signing DiBenedetto would make a lot of sense for them.
While 27 years old is not super young by modern-day Cup Series standards, DiBenedetto is still 13 years younger than Ryan Newman. He has outperformed his equipment in several races over the course of his career, most notably in his sixth place finish in the April race at Bristol Motor Speedway in the 2016 season when he drove the #83 BK Racing Ford, so he may be worth the risk for Richard Childress Racing.
But with DiBenedetto himself taking a risk by leaving Go Fas Racing, will Richard Childress Racing take a risk by signing him to replace Newman? It is certainly possible.
But if Richard Childress Racing do not sign DiBenedetto, Kurt Busch nor Daniel Hemric for the 2019 season, which other driver is in the running for them to sign?
