NASCAR Cup Series: Top 5 moments of Kasey Kahne’s career
#3: 2008 All-Star Race
The 2008 season was a roller coaster season for Kasey Kahne. After kicking off the season strong with four top 10 finishes in the first five races, he hit a wall and slowly slipped to 13th place in the championship standings. After winning six races in the 2006 season, Kahne was locked in to the 2007 All-Star Race, but the 2008 season featured a completely different story.
Kahne had compete i his first All-Star Open, a last-chance qualifier for the $1,000,000 main event. He finished in fifth place and missed the final cut. However, he won the NASCAR Fan Vote to secure his position in the All-Star Race.
After winning the Fan Vote, Kahne started shotgun on the field back in 24th place. But 100 laps later, the driver of the #9 Gillett Evernham Motorsport Dodge found itself beating the rest of the the field to the finish line and bringing home the checkered flag. Kahne led 17 laps of the race and became the first driver to win the Fan Vote and the All-Star Race in NASCAR history.
I was able to see this moment in person, which is something I’ll always remember. Kahne went from zero to hero that night, and this win ended up being the only All-Star Race win in his career.
