With five of the 13 races on the 2018-2019 Formula E schedule in the books, how do the sport’s 22 full-time drivers stack up against one another?
Four different drivers won one of the first four races of the 13-race 2018-2019 Formula E season. Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird appeared to become the first driver to win his second race of the season by winning the season’s fifth race, the Hong Kong ePrix, at Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit.
Bird initially won this 36-lap race around the 16-turn, 1.16-mile (1.860-kilometer) Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit temporary street circuit on Central Harbourfront of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong in somewhat of a controversial fashion.
Late contact between Bird, who was running in second place at the time, and race leader Andre Lotterer of DS Techeetah resulted in the right rear tire of Lotterer’s car going flat with just under two seconds remaining on the race’s 45-minute timer. Bird proceeded to take the lead and lead the race’s final two laps.
But following an investigation, Bird was issued a five-second time penalty, dropping him to sixth place and promoting Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara from second to first. This victory is the first victory of Mortara’s Formula E career, and it made him the fifth different driver to win a race through the season’s first five races.
Meanwhile, Lotterer has still not yet won a race this season.
