Formula E: Top 5 beginning to separate themselves in driver standings
By Asher Fair
The top five drivers in the Formula E driver standings have begun to separate themselves from the rest of the pack following the Berlin ePrix.
Following the 10th race on the 13-race 2018-2019 Formula E schedule, the Berlin ePrix, at Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit, the top five drivers in the driver standings have begun to separate themselves from the rest of the field.
Three races remain on this season’s schedule, and the top five drivers are now the only five drivers within a one-race striking distance of one another. This is down from nine drivers leading up to the Berlin ePrix.
With 29 points on the table in each race (25 for winning, three for taking the pole position and one for recording the fastest lap time), any one of these five drivers could lead the driver standings following the 11th and next race on the schedule, the Bern ePrix, at Bern Street Circuit in Bern, Switzerland.
Here are the current top five drivers in the driver standings.
Rank – Driver, Car, Team, Manufacturer: Points (Behind)
1st – Jean-Eric Vergne, #25, DS Techeetah, Spark-DS Automobiles: 102 (0)
2nd – Lucas di Grassi, #11, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler: 96 (-6)
3rd – Andre Lotterer, #36, DS Techeetah, Spark-DS Automobiles: 86 (-16)
4th – Antonio Felix da Costa, #28, BMW i Andretti Motorsport, Spark-BMW: 82 (-20)
5th – Robin Frijns, #4, Envision Virgin Racing, Spark-Audi: 81 (-21)

The highest driver in the driver standings who is not within 29 points of Vergne is Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans. Evans currently sits in sixth place in the standings with 69 points, and he trails Vergne by 33.
These five drivers have combined to win six of the 10 races that have been contested so far this season. DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Lucas di Grassi have each won two races while BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Antonio Felix da Costa and Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns have each won one. DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer has still never won a race in his Formula E career.
Four other drivers won the other four races that have been contested so far this season. Evans won one of these races, as did Mahindra Racing’s Jerome d’Ambrosio, Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird and Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara.
D’Ambrosio, Bird and Mortara currently sit in eighth, 11th and 12th place in the driver standings with 65 points (37 behind Vergne), 56 points (46 behind Vergne) and 52 points (50 behind Vergne), respectively. Along with Evans, they are all certainly still in championship contention, but they will need a lot to go their way for that to remain the case over the course of the season’s final three races.
The Bern ePrix is not scheduled to take place until Saturday, June 22, so there are four weeks until the Formula E driver standings will change. Which driver will ultimately be crowned champion in mid-July? Will the champion be one of the five drivers who currently sit in the top five in the standings?
