Despite the fact that Jean-Eric Vergne became the first two-time champion in Formula E history with his seventh place finish in New York City ePrix Race 2, Sebastien Buemi was able to pass him for the top spot in the final edition of the formulated Formula E Driver Power Rankings in the 2018-2019 season.
Given how Buemi has performed recently, however, this was not super surprising. After starting the season with one top five finish in the first eight races, he close out the season with five consecutive top five finishes.
Additionally, heading into the 10th race of the 13-race season, he had not finished a race on the podium yet this season. He responded by reeling off four consecutive podium finishes to close out the 2018-2019 campaign, and he finished the season with the sport’s best average finish in the last five races at 2.80.
Vergne’s average finish in the last five races was still an impressive 5.40, but his New York City ePrix Race 1 finish of 15th place prevented it from being a lot higher. His other four results over the course of the season’s final five races only totaled 11 places, an average finish of 2.75 in each race, and they included three podium finishes and two victories.
Formula E action is set to resume in the 2019-2020 season, as the New York City ePrix Race 2 was the 13th and final race of the 2018-2019 season. The opening race of the 2019-2020 season is Ad Diriyah ePrix Race 1, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Riyadh Street Circuit in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 14 races are on the 2019-2020 schedule.
