Lucas Oil Raceway

Lucas Oil Raceway hosted both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series until 2011. The Xfinity Series began racing there in 1982. When the Cup Series started racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1994, the Xfinity Series race became a support race for that race weekend. The Truck Series raced at Lucas Oil Raceway from its inception in 1995. The annual race was contested the night before the Xfinity Series race.

2011 marked the final year for both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series at the four-turn, 0.686-mile (1.104-kilometer) Lucas Oil Raceway oval in Brownsburg, Indiana. Occasional Truck Series driver Timothy Peters won the last Truck Series race at the track and current Cup Series driver Brad Keselowski won the last Xfinity Series race there.

For 2012, NASCAR moved the Xfinity Series race to nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a companion race to the Cup Series race there. The Xfinity Series continues to race at the Brickyard. But also in 2012, the Truck Series schedule was reduced from 25 races to 22 races, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway does not host any of the current 23.

Lucas Oil Raceway still annually hosts the ARCA Menards Series as well. Regarding future NASCAR races at the track, the track is undergoing a renovation which track officials hope will entice NASCAR to bring racing back. However, track officials understand that the renovations do not guarantee a return.

Having attended the ARCA Menards Series race there this year, I learned that while Lucas Oil Raceway is a short track, it can be abrasive on tires. Yes, it needs renovations, but it is a large property, so there is room for upgrades.

The ARCA Menards Series is scheduled to race at Lucas Oil Raceway on Friday, July 3, 2020 as the start of the race weekend in Indianapolis, with the Xfinity Series and Cup Series races scheduled to take place the following two days, respectively, at the Brickyard. If you want NASCAR to return to Lucas Oil Raceway, go to the ARCA race – the higher the attendance, the better the odds.
