IndyCar: Early 2020 power rankings; a new champion?

Charlie Kimball, who was recently confirmed at A.J. Foyt Enterprises as their lone full-time driver for the 2020 season alongside Dalton Kellett (nine races), Tony Kanaan (five races) and Sebastien Bourdais (four races), ranks at the bottom to start the season. He is capable of delivering decent results for teams that don’t quite measure up to the powerhouses of IndyCar, as we saw in 2018 with Carlin and again in 2019 as a part-time driver for the team. But even those numbers (eight top 10 finishes in 24 races) would be considered impressive at A.J. Foyt’s team given how badly they have struggled in recent years.
Driving for one of IndyCar’s top three teams, Marco Andretti hasn’t won a race in eight and a half seasons, he hasn’t finished on the podium in four and a half seasons, and he has failed to finish a single race in the top five in two of the last four seasons. Entering his 15th season, he has just two career victories, including only one in the last 13 years. Saying he has a lot to prove is an understatement, but for about the 14th straight year, it’s absolutely true.
