NASCAR: 5 most disappointing teams so far in 2020
By Konner Metz
Disappointing teams: #4 – Germain Racing
The single-car team led by Ty Dillon have failed to improve on 2019’s solid success, or even hold steady to that performance. The #13 Chevrolet has fallen backwards in terms of speed and results.
Dillon’s only top 10 finish so far this season came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway back in February. Even more concerning is Dillon’s driver rating. Aside from the superspeedway races at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, he has had no ratings above 75.
He sits in 27th place in the point standings, behind four rookies and both Front Row Motorsports drivers. During the 2019 season, he was never below 24th in points.
Dillon has had markedly less success than his brother Austin, but the majority of Germain Racing’s struggles are not the fault of the driver. The team simply have not delivered fast race cars that give the younger Dillon brother a chance to compete for top 20 finishes on a regular basis.
While Richard Childress Racing and the Childress-affiliated Richard Petty Motorsports team have made notable improvements from 2019, Germain Racing have declined despite continuing to receive technical support from the Childress organization.
The removal of practice for the remainder of the season has been a detriment to the lesser-funded Germain crew, but their 2020 performance is reminiscent of their typical standing in the series when Casey Mears drove the #13 Chevrolet.
Improvement happens periodically, but they are never able to continue improving and work toward a playoff berth. If nothing changes over the season’s final 17 races, they will be left looking back at 2020 as a missed opportunity.
