Possible 2021 Richard Petty Motorsports drivers: Ty Dillon

Ty Dillon has driven for Germain Racing since his rookie season in the NASCAR Cup Series back in 2017, but that is unlikely to continue in 2021.

Both the 28-year-old Lewisville, North Carolina native and GEICO signed multi-year extensions to continue with the #13 team back in late 2017, but GEICO’s deal is set to expire at the end of the 2020 season, and they have informed the team that they will not renew their deal.

As a result, Bob Germain was forced to sell his team. This sequence of events is ultimately what led to Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin purchasing the charter and starting a new team for Bubba Wallace.

But this may work out in Dillon’s favor anyway, as with Wallace out at Richard Petty Motorsports and set to utilize the charter that Dillon had been using, the #43 Chevrolet is open for Dillon to continue his Cup Series career at a different one-car Chevrolet team, and the move would make sense for several reasons.

Most notably, Richard Petty Motorsports, like Germain Racing, have a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, which would make that transition smoother. And let’s not forget that team owner Richard Childress, whose grandson Austin Dillon competes for the flagship two-car team, is also the grandfather of Ty.
