Top IndyCar drivers of all-time: #7 – Bobby Unser

The second of three Unsers to appear not only on this list but in the top eight also won several dozen races, multiple championships and multiple Indy 500s. Bobby Unser, Al Jr.’s uncle, ranks eighth on the all-time IndyCar wins list, having recently dropped from fifth due to the success of three active drivers.

Bobby and Al Jr. had similar careers from a statistical perspective, with the former gaining a slighter edge due to the fact that his one extra win happened to be an extra Indy 500 win. He won the race for the third and final time in what was his 19th and final attempt in 1981.

Bobby won 35 races throughout his career, and three of those wins came in the Indy 500. He also won two USAC national championships. Much like Al Jr., only two other drivers in American open-wheel racing history beat Bobby’s stat line in fall, winning more than 35 races, three Indy 500s and two titles.

One of them happens to be his brother, who we will get to a little bit later on, and as mentioned in the slide about Al Jr., one of them is the greatest IndyCar driver of all-time.
