Top IndyCar drivers of all-time: #4 – Al Unser

No, Al Unser Sr. isn’t the one driver with more wins, championships and Indy 500 victories than Dario Franchitti, but what he was able to accomplish throughout his career puts him one spot higher than Franchitti on this list.

The two are, for all intents and purposes of these rankings, effectively interchangeable, especially given the fact that Franchitti competed for a shorter amount of time and that is one reason why he has fewer wins.

Of all the success had by the Unser family, Al Sr. leads the group in each and every category. Combined, the trio of he, his son Al Jr. and brother Bobby won 108 races, seven championships and nine Indy 500s. All won at least 34 races, multiple championships and multiple Indy 500s, yet Al Sr. sits atop all three categories.

With 39 career race wins, he sits four wins ahead of Bobby and five ahead of Al Jr. With three titles, he sits one ahead of both Bobby and Al Jr., and with four Indy 500 victories, he sits one win ahead of Bobby and two ahead of Al Jr.

His 39 wins are good for a fifth place tie on the all-time wins list, although given the fact that two active drivers have 39 and 37, he could very well fall to as low as seventh in the near future. Still, the fact that he is a three-time champion, coupled with the fact that he is one of only three drivers to win the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on four occasions, make him an easy pick for #4.
