Teams with open seats for 2022: No. 2 – JTG Daugherty Racing

JTG Daugherty Racing may actually have two cars without confirmed drivers for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, provided they continue to run the #37 Chevrolet, which is currently driven by Ryan Preece, without a charter.

The team sold the charter that they had used to run the #37 Chevrolet to Spire Motorsports following the 2020 season, but they still run the car full-time for Preece anyway, and he hasn’t missed a race. However, there were no guarantees earlier in the year that he would indeed run all 36 races on the schedule.

As for the chartered entry without a confirmed driver for next year, that is the #47 Chevrolet. By no means is it guaranteed that even this car will run with a charter next year, considering the current demand for charters and what teams seeking expansion or simply entry into the Cup Series are willing to pay for one.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. currently pilots the #47 Chevrolet, and he has clearly been the better of the JTG Daugherty Racing teammates since they were first paired up at the start of last season, showing potential to win races — and at more veunes than just superspeedways.

However, inconsistency on his behalf would make it less than surprising if they seek to replace him after 2021. Will either one of these two drivers be back in 2022?
