Formula 1: Major announcement ‘accidentally’ leaked
By Asher Fair
A major announcement regarding the Formula 1 schedule was “accidentally” leaked by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.
While Formula 1 recently confirmed that what was initially slated to be a record-breaking 23-race 2021 schedule had been reduced to 22 races, which would still be a new record, only 21 of those 22 races had been confirmed.
The Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, which had already been delayed by eight months from its initial slot as the season opener in March, had been scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 21.
This would have made the race that traditionally serves as the season opener the 20th and antepenultimate race of the 2021 season.
However, it was announced that due to ongoing COVID-19-related restrictions, this race would not take place as scheduled, marking two straight seasons without a Formula 1 race Down Under.
An announcement as to what the season’s 20th race will end up being is expected today after Red Bull team principal Christian Horner “accidentally” leaked to ServusTV that Formula 1 is set to make its first ever appearance at Losail International Circuit on Sunday, November 21 instead.
Losail International Circuit is a 16-turn, 3.343-mile (5.380-kilometer) road course in Lusail, Al Daayen, Qatar which has hosted a plethora of other racing series since it opened back in 2004.
Fortunately, this track had long been rumored as the replacement for Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, so the fact that Horner seemed to “spill the beans” really doesn’t seem like too big of a deal, especially with this confirmation set to be formally announced in the immediate future anyway.
This confirmation would set up a final seven-race stretch of the 2021 season which includes races in the countries of Turkey (Sunday, October 10), United States of America (Sunday, October 24), Mexico (Sunday, November 7), Brazil (Sunday, November 14), Qatar (Sunday, November 21), Saudi Arabia (Sunday, December 5), and United Arab Emirates (Sunday, December 12).
