Charters that could be on the move: No. 3 – Petty Ware Racing #51

Here’s where things get interesting. As mentioned on the previous two slides, Rick Ware Racing hinted that the #52 team and the #53 team will not be a part of the organization for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.

That hint came in the form of a tweet sent out by Ware’s team three Fridays ago. Billed as a 100-day countdown to the Daytona 500, the tweet also subtly included the team logos for the #15 team and the #51 team.

First of all, why aren’t we discussing the #15 team despite discussing the #52 team and the #53 team and now the #51 team? Because this team has been run, and will presumably continue to be run, using one of Rick Ware Racing’s three charters.

Don’t they have four charters? They do, but their fourth charter, which is used to run the #51 team, is technically owned by Richard Petty Motorsports. As a result, this charter is used to run the #51 Petty Ware Racing entry.

And that’s where the really gray area comes in.

Would the charter that is currently used to run the #51 entry remain the same, with the charters used to run the #52 and #53 entries being shipped out?

Or would Richard Petty Motorsports piece together a deal with another team (GMS Racing?) to send them this charter, meaning that Rick Ware Racing would have to use one of the charters they have used to run the #52 team or the #53 team to run the #51 team (presumably making it a regular Rick Ware Racing team if it gets to this point)?

We know that the #51 charter is no longer under threat of repossession from NASCAR, and how likely is it that Ware would want to part ways with multiple charters of his own?
