More than three weeks into the offseason, several teams face uncertainty regarding charters for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.

Several teams seeking charters for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, including 23XI Racing, Kaulig Racing and Trackhouse Racing, have managed to put deals together to acquire them.

A number of other teams, however, remain uncertain as it pertains to their charter situations for next year, and the number of charters potentially available has drastically shrunk.

Here’s a look at the three teams now at the forefront of the charter market and related rumors.

Teams needing charters for 2022: No. 1 – GMS Racing

GMS Racing have never competed in a NASCAR Cup Series race before, but they announced earlier in 2021 that they plan to change that in 2022 by entering the series in a full-time capacity.

The team plan to field the #94 Chevrolet throughout the upcoming 36-race season, and Ty Dillon, who lost his ride in the Cup Series after Germain Racing shut down following the 2020 campaign, is set to pilot the entry.

There were initially questions regarding whether or not they would pursue a charter for their first season of competition at the sport’s top level. They have since addressed the matter and noted that they had been in advanced talks to purchase or lease one.

It is assumed that Rick Ware Racing would be the seller or lessor, given the fact that it is speculated that they will only be running two entries as opposed to four next year. Richard Petty Motorsports could be in play here as well, given the fact that one of their two charters is actually used by Rick Ware Racing.
