Teams that still need drivers for 2022: No. 3 – Carlin

Carlin are expected to be back for a fifth season of IndyCar competition in 2022, but there are questions as to how, exactly, they will operate.

There are rumors that they will merge with Juncos Hollinger Racing, the new team started by a partnership between Juncos Racing owner Ricardo Juncos and Williams Formula 1 shareholder Brad Hollinger.

Juncos Hollinger Racing fielded the #77 Chevrolet for Callum Ilott in the final three races of the 2021 season, and they have confirmed that they plan to run the car full-time for Ilott throughout the 2022 season.

A merger between Carlin and Juncos Hollinger Racing could do both teams a ton of good. Carlin have struggled since entering IndyCar in 2018, and the same is pretty much expected from Juncos Hollinger Racing in an ultra-competitive series. Look no farther than their three 2021 results: 25th, 22nd and 26th place.

Even in Juncos Racing’s limited appearance from 2017 to 2019, they finished no higher than 15th place in a single race.

Regardless, Carlin have a seat to fill. Will Max Chilton be back behind the wheel of the #59 Chevrolet for the road and street course races? Will Conor Daly drive the car in the oval races? Will the car have just one driver? Could this be a potential landing spot for Ryan Hunter-Reay if he doesn’t get the job at Ed Carpenter Racing?
