Possible landing spots for Ty Gibbs: No. 3 – #54 Toyota

We have seen all three of these options (#18 Toyota, #20 Toyota and #54 Toyota) used as the “star car” by Joe Gibbs Racing in recent years, but among those three, the only one that has not been used for a full-time driver is the #54 Toyota.

Given the success that Ty Gibbs had behind the wheel of the #54 Toyota in his rookie season, with a win on debut at the Daytona International Speedway road course and three more wins in 17 additional starts throughout the season, it is entirely possible that he will simply become the full-time driver of the #54 Toyota.

When the team ran just three cars prior to the 2020 season, it was the #54 Toyota (among their four cars from 2020 and 2021) which was not included in their lineup.

In fact, prior to 2020, the #54 Toyota was not run by the team since 2015. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, the #54 Toyota was, along with the #20 Toyota, used for multiple drivers.

So this is probably the least likely scenario, but don’t rule it out, given what Gibbs has already done behind the wheel of the car in a limited role.
