Daytona 500 candidates: No. 3 – NY Racing Team

NY Racing Team teased a return to the Daytona 500 last year, and nothing ended up coming of it. They seem to be doing the same thing this year, though whether or not the end result is the same remains to be seen.

Back on Friday, January 7, when there were 44 days to go until the Daytona 500, they posted a picture of a #44 Chevrolet — a Next Gen car, too — with the caption, “44 Days……. Paint Scheme is for “Test” events”. The sponsor shown was Urban Youth Racing School.

NY Racing Team have competed in the Cup Series very sporadically over the last decade. Since making their debut in November 2012 at Phoenix Raceway, they have only competed in 16 more races. They either failed to qualify for or withdrew from 12 others.

Their most recent appearance came with J.J. Yeley behind the wheel of the #7 Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May 2018. His race ended early as a result of a fuel pump issue, netting him a 38th place finish.

This start is the team’s only start since Reed Sorenson drove their #44 Chevrolet to a 32nd place finish in their most recent Daytona 500 back in February 2015.
