Formula 1: What will Lewis Hamilton’s new name be?
By Asher Fair
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton plans to change his name in the near future. What will his new name be?
Following another offseason full of retirement rumors, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is back for a 10th season with the Silver Arrows, a 16th season in Formula 1, and a second attempt at becoming the sport’s first ever eight-time world champion.
The seven-time champion is set to begin his pursuit of the 2022 world title, which would break a tie with Michael Schumacher atop the all-time list, this Sunday in the Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit. The race is the first of 23 (right now, 22 confirmed) races on this year’s schedule.
Ahead of the first season with the new rules and regulations aimed at effectively leveling the playing field across the sport’s 10 teams — and the first season with George Russell as his teammate — the 37-year-old Briton revealed that he plans to change his name.
He didn’t announce when the change might take place, but it is very possible that he could race with a new name in 2022.
He plans to add his mother’s maiden name to his name at some point in the near future. Here is what he had to saw in front of a crowd at the 2022 Dubai Expo earlier this week.
"“It would mean the world to my family [to win an eighth world championship]. It would mean a lot to me knowing that, for example, I am really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton. None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier, and I am just about to put that in my name.”"
Lewis’s mother’s name is Carmen Larbalestier. She and his father, Anthony Hamilton, separated when Lewis was still young, and both remarried, with Carmen becoming Carmen Lockhart after she took the surname of her second husband.
Hamilton spoke about this concept of name changes associated with marriage.
"“I don’t fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses their name, and I really want my mum’s name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”"
The most likely option for Hamilton would seem to be Lewis Hamilton-Larbalestier, but Hamilton hasn’t confirmed this. He obviously doesn’t plan to get rid of “Hamilton”, as he indicated quite clearly that he values both names very much.
The 2022 Formula 1 season is scheduled to get underway on Sunday, March 20 with the Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit. If you have not yet begun a free trial of FuboTV, now would be an ideal time to do so!
