Formula 1 power unit rankings: No. 3 – Renault

With rising concerns over the Renault engine after an executive was quoted as saying they were prioritizing peak performance over reliability, this led to fears of Fernando Alonso being subjected to a repeat of the McLaren-Honda partnership which led to his initial retirement.

Those concerns have been tabled for the time being, as Alpine brought home a double points finish to open up the 2022 season after their drivers had established solid midfield pace throughout the course of the race, with Alonso within reach of teammate Esteban Ocon for the majority of the event.

Alpine have found a niche for themselves in the midfield, where they will potentially be able to score consistently throughout the season.

Appearing reliable when contrasted with the horror show that was Red Bull Powertrains, it remains to be seen whether the Renault power unit can remain viable (in terms of both reliability and performance) with the component-wear of multiple events.

As the season progresses towards power-sensitive circuits such as Monza and Spa, the Alpine team will be keen to see the true peak performance of their power units with wear from the preceding events.
