Formula 1: 5 possible locations for another American Grand Prix
By Ian Higgins
Possible F1 venues: No. 5 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (1.0)
To not have listed the return of the Brickyard would be a crime against motorsports.
Playing host to the United States Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007, Indianapolis Motor Speedway provided iconic moments, such as the gladiatorial bout between McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton as well as Ferrari’s unforgettable one-two formation finish with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.
Likely the most famous racing facility in the United States alongside Daytona International Speedway and Laguna Seca, Indianapolis would present a welcome return for the vast majority of Formula 1 fans who have called for its return ever since it was replaced by Circuit of the Americas in 2012.
Having seen success at the Hermann Tilke-designed facility, there has since been little to no outcry for the return of the Brickyard.
What makes the decision so difficult to commit to is a general lack of appeal for international tourism, as well as its location in the states. Having chosen an eastern seaboard location for the Miami Grand Prix, there would likely be a major push to place the newest race to the west coast.
With all of these options in mind, despite the history and fan appeal of classic Formula 1 venues, Las Vegas remains the highest-ranking option on the table. With a western location for a glut of Formula 1 fans who may have been previously unable to reach Circuit of the Americas, an excess tourism appeal, and the freedom for Hermann Tilke to conjure up his own track design, look forward to a race under the lights of the Las Vegas strip.
