Ty Gibbs 2023 landing spots: No. 3 – Joe Gibbs Racing (#19 Toyota)

Ever since Kyle Busch’s comments about his uncertain future and his lack of sponsorship with Joe Gibbs Racing beyond the conclusion of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, Martin Truex Jr.’s earlier comments about an uncertain future had been largely pushed to the side — until last weekend.

Toward the end of March, Truex admitted that he wasn’t sure whether or not he would be back for a fifth season behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota.

But he also said that a decision would be made “soon”, and roughly two months removed from that statement, he said last weekend that this decision should be coming within a couple weeks. Could it be Truex whom Gibbs replaces at his grandfather’s Cup Series team?

Of the two drivers at Joe Gibbs Racing with uncertain futures, Truex may actually be the one to keep a closer eye on. He has been clear before that he doesn’t have to do keep doing what he is doing and he continues competing because he enjoys it and is competitive.

So while the decision on Busch’s future is sponsorship dependent, this one appears to be completely up to Truex.

Truex has not yet won a race in the Next Gen era, but he has still been competitive. While winless, he sits in fifth place in the point standings with two top five finishes in 15 races. Is he up for another season in the new car?

Will a promotion to the Cup Series happen for Ty Gibbs in 2023, or is 2024 a more likely option? Regardless, he appears poised to make the jump up to the four-car Toyota powerhouse in the very near future.
