Ferrari’s worst moments of 2022: No. 1 – Breakdown in Baku

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes the number one spot on the list of the worst moments of the 2022 Formula 1 season for Ferrari, and for good reason.

Carlos Sainz Jr. was forced to retire just nine laps into the race after suffering a hydraulic issue. It wasn’t long after when Charles Leclerc joined his teammate in the paddock without a car, after his power unit failed and smoke poured out behind his car. His race ended after 20 laps.

It is the only race this season which both Ferraris failed to finish. To add insult to injury, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finished first and second overall, securing maximum points on the weekend to spring 80 points clear of Ferrari.

It was a pivotal moment for Red Bull’s season, as Ferrari enjoyed a similar result in Bahrain to start the season. Both Verstappen and Perez failed to finish that race, allowing the Scuderia to start off the year with a bang.

Furthermore, the Baku result cushioned Verstappen’s lead over Leclerc and allowed Perez to leapfrog Leclerc in the driver standings, albeit briefly.

While Ferrari trailed in the championship by 36 points entering Baku, it was absolutely crucial for them to score good points. But, as everyone knows, nothing seems to go right for them these days.
