The starting lineup for the 2022 IndyCar season’s penultimate race at Portland International Raceway is set following Saturday’s qualifying session.

Following a weekend off, IndyCar is set for the penultimate of the 2022 season this Sunday afternoon at Portland International Raceway.

Heading into the Grand Prix of Portland, there are seven drivers still mathematically eligible to win this year’s championship, and all sit within 58 points of the lead of the point standings.

One of those drivers, Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin, took the pole position for Sunday’s 110-lap race around the 12-turn, 1.967-mile (3.166-kilometer) natural terrain road course in Portland, Oregon.

McLaughlin took the pole position for this race by recording a top lap time of 58.2349 seconds (121.597 miles per hour) in the third and final round of Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session, the Firestone Fast Six, behind the wheel of his #3 Chevrolet. With the point he scored for the pole, he now sits 53 points out of the points lead, still in sixth place.

Teammate Josef Newgarden, another one of the championship contenders, qualified in second place behind the wheel of his #2 Chevrolet but is set to start in eighth behind the wheel as a result of a six-place grid penalty stemming from an engine change.

Set to start alongside McLaughlin on the front row in second place behind the wheel of his #12 Chevrolet is his other teammate, Will Power. The current points leader completed a Team Penske sweep of the top three in qualifying.

The other four championship contenders are Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Alex Palou, Scott Dixon, and Marcus Ericsson, as well as Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward. They are set to line up in fourth, 16th, 18th, and fifth place behind the wheel of their #10 Honda, #9 Honda, #8 Honda, and #5 Chevrolet, respectively.
