Possible Mick Schumacher replacements: No. 2 – Daniel Ricciardo

Throughout silly season, Daniel Ricciardo’s name has been brought up in regard to basically all the seats without confirmed drivers in the 2023 Formula 1 driver lineup, and Mick Schumacher’s Haas seat was no exception.

The 33-year-old Australian was originally under contract with McLaren through the 2023 season, but he is set to be replaced by Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri following the 2022 campaign.

While Piastri was initially announced as the replacement for the Aston Martin-bound Fernando Alonso at Alpine, he denied the team’s announcement and was later confirmed at McLaren alongside Lando Norris.

Interestingly, Piastri signed with McLaren well before the chaos unfolded — and even before Ricciardo reiterated his commitment to the Woking-based team through 2023, not knowing that he was already in line to be replaced.

Ricciardo admitted that he would be willing to leave Formula 1 for 2023 if it means taking “two steps forward” in 2024, but there is no way to guarantee such an outcome at this stage, and he knows that.

He also knows that the upcoming season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could be his final Formula 1 race, and given his talks about becoming a reserve driver, it appears his chances at the Haas seat are long gone.
