Formula 1: 5 possible replacements for Mick Schumacher in 2023
By Asher Fair
Possible Mick Schumacher replacements: No. 5 – Robert Shwartzman
While probably a dark horse candidate at any stage throughout this silly season, Robert Shwartzman has what it takes to be considered for the second Haas seat.
In addition to his longtime Ferrari ties, he had an impressive stint in Formula 2 in 2020 and 2021, winning multiple races in both seasons and finishing runner-up to the highly touted Oscar Piastri during the latter.
Let’s also address the elephant in the room. We briefly touched on the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the previous slide in regard to Nikita Mazepin losing his seat to Kevin Magnussen ahead of the 2022 season.
The 23-year-old Russo-Israeli driver competed under a Russian racing license throughout his career until 2022, when the FIA banned the use of Russian national emblems due to the invasion. As a result, Shwartzman made the switch to an Israeli license.
Plus, as we also briefly touched upon in the previous slide, Mazepin being dropped had more to do with his father and sponsorship than anything else.
So it’s not as if Shwartzman is banned from competing in Formula 1, and if Haas surprise fans and go the Ferrari route, he may be the best option available.
If Mick Schumacher doesn’t end up returning to Haas for the 2023 Formula 1 season, will it be one of these five drivers who replaces him, or will the team look elsewhere?
