Possible Indy 500 additions: No. 2 – Dreyer & Reinbold Racing

When Dreyer & Reinbold Racing announced that they would be partnering with Cusick Motorsports to field the No. 24 Chevrolet for Stefan Wilson, they also stated that they “will enter a second entry for the 2023 Indianapolis 500, with formal details to be announced in the near future.”

The team have fielded two Indy 500 entries in four of the last five years, including last year when they fielded the No. 23 Chevrolet for Santino Ferrucci and the No. 24 Chevrolet for Sage Karam.

Ferrucci is now a full-time driver for A.J. Foyt Enterprises while the partnership with Cusick Motorsports indicates that a return for Karam is unlikely, since he had driven the No. 24 Chevrolet in each of the last six Indy 500s going back to 2016.

Who will be the team’s second driver, assuming this entry is indeed formally announced in the “near future”?

J.R. Hildebrand drove for the team each year from 2018 to 2020, but he joined A.J. Foyt Enterprises in 2021 and competed for the team again in 2022. If they don’t add another entry in 2023 (or even if they do), could he reunite with the team that gave him his first shot in IndyCar in 2010?

If not, who else might the Indy 500-only team consider for the second entry? Surely there would be significant interest among Indy 500 hopefuls, considering the competitiveness displayed by the team on race day in recent years.
