NASCAR changes Talladega results hours after the race

Upon further review, NASCAR made several changes to the results of Sunday afternoon’s Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

When the caution flag came out in overtime after the white flag had been taken in Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, there were some questions as to where several drivers were running.

The initial unofficial results were, as they sometimes understandably are, a little bit off, even within the top five and the top 10. But even the official results that NASCAR shared after the race were edited upon further review.

A few hours after the checkered flag flew, with Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch taking the checkered flag to win the 196-lap race around the four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked Lincoln, Alabama oval, NASCAR modified the results.

In total, 12 drivers saw their results modified, with five moving up and seven dropping back. Rick Ware Racing’s Riley Herbst benefitted most from the changes, picking up five positions by moving up from 25th to 20th place. 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick was the big loser, dropping three spots from 13th to 16th.

Just one other driver picked up multiple positions, that being Spire Motorsports’ Ty Dillon (17th to 14th place). Two others dropped multiple spots, those being Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin (15th to 17th) and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola (20th to 22nd).

Here is a rundown of the changes NASCAR made to the GEICO 500 results at Talladega Superspeedway.

• Alex Bowman: 14th to 13th (+1)
• Ty Dillon: 17th to 14th (+3)
• Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: 16th to 15th (+1)
• Tyler Reddick: 13th to 16th (-3)
• Denny Hamlin: 15th to 17th (-2)
• B.J. McLeod: 19th to 18th (+1)
• Justin Haley: 18th to 19th (-1)
• Riley Herbst: 25th to 20th (+5)
• Aric Almirola: 20th to 22nd (-2)
• Ross Chastain: 22nd to 23rd (-1)
• Austin Hill: 23rd to 24th (-1)
• Corey LaJoie: 24th to 25th (-1)

Of course, with several drivers moving up and down, the standings have also changed. Just one of these 12 drivers is not points eligible in the Cup Series, that being Herbst since he competes full-time in the Xfinity Series.
