NASCAR: Carl Edwards to Trackhouse Racing Team?

Carl Edwards wants to visit the Trackhouse Racing Team shop, but he has no interest in returning to the NASCAR Cup Series.

After the 2016 NASCAR Cup Series season, Carl Edwards made the shocking decision to retire, bringing an abrupt end to a 13-year career which saw him win 28 races.

Given the unexpected nature of the Columbia, Missouri native’s announcement, a lot of fans have long been convinced that Edwards isn’t completely done, and whenever his name is mentioned in a NASCAR context, it seems that the rumors begin to swirl.

Seven seasons removed from his most recent Cup Series start, some fans still have hope, and while the 43-year-old has shot down the rumors before, that hasn’t stopped new ones from emerging.

Edwards was recently on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio and mentioned that he is planning to visit the Trackhouse Racing Team facility.

I’m hoping to go down to Nashville and see the Trackhouse facility soon. Just so many neat things going in on the sport. It’s really exciting. Glad to be a very small part of it today.”"

Trackhouse Racing Team field two full-time entries in the Cup Series, the No. 1 Chevrolet for Ross Chastain and the No. 99 Chevrolet for Daniel Suarez. Both drivers are already under contract through next year, but the Justin Marks and Pitbull-owned team also run a third car in select events.

That car, the No. 91 Chevrolet, is part of what they call PROJECT91, which is designed to give renowned international racing drivers the opportunity to compete in select Cup Series races.

2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen drove the car at Watkins Glen International last August and Circuit of the Americas earlier this season, and Marks has said that a new driver will be driving the car when it makes its next appearance.

Is Edwards in the running?

While his return would be embraced by fans, PROJECT91 was never designed for NASCAR drivers. It was purely meant for drivers who compete in other series. Marks confirmed this when Trackhouse Racing Team was ruled out as a potential part-time landing spot for Jimmie Johnson, before he ultimately announced his return with Legacy Motor Club.

To add onto that, Edwards isn’t interested in returning anyway.

Edwards was recently named to the list of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers.
